![]() ![]() It respects the player at every turn, while still ushering them through a compelling experience.Īnd in the remaster, there's some nice touches that go beyond all this, like one really cool Easter Egg that messes with the entire series' timeline. On top of this, mission variety is huge in Modern Warfare, placing you in all kinds of different missions, from the weirdly zen "Death from Above" where you take out tiny little enemies far below, the frenetic "Shock and Awe." Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is never as cinematic as its offspring, but it's far more immersive and dramatic. While I still think the best way to design a game like this is to leave multiple paths open to exploit, the basic premise holds true: Levels that are designed, either linearly or branching, are better and more engaging than free-form on the whole. Mission design is impressive as well, and reminds me once again how much I prefer a linear game with well designed levels to a repetitive open world. ![]() Given its squad-based nature, there's still some hand-holding involved, but not nearly as much as later games, or many modern games in other franchises. No special vision that allows me to track my enemies. There's no markers hovering above enemy heads. (You should read this if you want to understand more about why this mission is so great.)Īnd it just feels really good to go into gunfights without any special powers. The wonderful stealth/sniper mission All Ghillied Up still ranks among my favorite in any Call of Duty campaign, and really among my favorite missions period. Playing old missions like Crew Expendable and War Pig and being referred to as "Soap" again, only this time in high definition, is all really great. Other than that, my experience with the campaign has been flawless. He fell from his perch as stiff as a board, like a downed mannequin. The only bug I've encountered was when I shot a sniper and the physics broke. Textures are more detailed, colors are richer, and faces look much more realistic. The graphics don't look exactly modern- Infinite Warfare's campaign will look better, no doubt-but they're a huge improvement over the original game, even on PC. Thankfully, the remaster is really sharp. But another down-to-earth, modern warfare game that feels real, grounded and relevant. However, outside of its impressive face lift it offers only a few additions to make it feel new to returning players.I'll also keep rooting for Activision to commission another one like it-not bigger and more bombastic, the way each game in the Modern Warfare series became. Though the sprawling level design and pacing are definitely dated, the core of Modern Warfare’s combat has aged remarkably well, and that foundation keeps its action movie-style campaign and its multiplayer fun even nine years later. Call of Duty 4 is a winner." Read the full original Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare review here.Īfter years of futuristic CoDs, going back to the present day with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered is a welcome return to combat that makes me feel simultaneously powerful and helpless due to the way it’s both literally and figuratively grounded. This is a truly fantastic multiplayer offering that's as deep as any other online game available. Though the single-player lacks length, the multiplayer should keep you invested in COD4 for the long winter. The overall story is standard action movie fare, but the relationships built over the short five hours of play are surprisingly strong. Calling it intense may be an understatement. The single-player experience is easily Infinity Ward's best work to date. "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is a fantastic game. ![]()
